Managing ADHD Through a Crisis

Does anybody else feel like they’re in a dream right now? Because I definitely do!! With the craziness due to Covid-19 our lives have been completely turned upside down.  Our routines have been altered, we’re working from home, and we have no idea when this will all be over.  Anxiety levels might be high, and to be honest several of us are scared.  Whether you are vulnerable or those you love are, this can be a very stressful time. And on top of all of that, what about your ADHD?!?

Whether there is a crisis or not, our ADHD is still there.  I’ll admit, I’ve struggled over the past few weeks just like many others have.  I struggled to get my meds due to backups in the pharmacy, schools have closed and I’ve had several cancellations from clients, and I’m still trying to figure out what my daily routines should look like. But I’m not going to let that control me.  One of the biggest things that has helped me in managing my ADHD is taking control of it, owning it. When we own it, we can harness it in different ways.

So what does that mean in the midst of a global crisis? It means taking care of yourself. It means taking breaks when need be. It also means this is a time where you can use your creativity and be a resource for others.  But remember that it’s going to look different for everyone. How others are managing may look different than your management, and that’s okay!! Figure out what your tipping points are and apply the strategies you know that work. Things may look different now, but that doesn’t have to change you! You are capable of taking control and making the best of our current situation. And don’t forget that it’s okay to ask for help!! Nobody expects you to do this on your own, now is the time to come together as a community to support one another.

No matter whether there is a crisis or not, you have the power to harness and manage your ADHD.

Stay safe and stay sane y’all,

Kathryn
