Self-Awareness of ADHD in Adulthood

One of the biggest misconceptions is that ADHD is only a childhood disorder. As someone who was diagnosed at age 20 and living with ADHD let met tell ya… THEY’RE WRONG! ADHD is very much a lifetime disorder. What we tend to find however is that in adulthood we’ve learned tools and strategies that help us manage our ADHD. So rather than us growing out of ADHD, we’ve come to learn how to thrive with it. Now, does this mean I still don’t have my times where I struggle because of my ADHD? Absolutely not!! Even with the strategies I’ve learned, I’m still going to have my tough days.

One of the biggest differences in how I manage my ADHD versus when I was younger, is my self awareness of it. Self awareness is HUGE people!! This is a large focus in the ADHD coaching I do as well because it is that important. Let’s think about… how can you change a habit if we don’t understand the when’s, where’s, why’s, and how’s of it. I’m not going to claim to have all the answers, but these were some things that help raise my self awareness:

  1. Taking the time to reflect when necessary
  2. Openly discussing issues with those I trust
  3. STOP SELF-SHAMING
  4. Taking personal time when feeling overwhelmed
  5. Being open about my feelings, reactions, needs, and wants.

While these are just a few things that help in raising my own-self awareness, they might just be the beginning stepping stones for someone else. Starting with these steps are what help me manage my ADHD on a day to day basis as an adult. I may be dealing with different issues now than as a child, but these techniques are just as useful!
