How I Became an ADHD Life Coach

As I was graduating college in 2013, I was meeting with a psychiatrist regularly. While I was learning to manage my ADHD, it was clear to her (and myself!) that I was struggling to see direction after college. I was gaining a BS in Psychology and minoring in French, but my only real job experience had been with lifeguarding and being a swim coach in the summers. I remember during one of our sessions, my psychiatrist casually made a comment about me being a good ADHD coach. I must have looked confused because I had never heard of ADHD coaching before! I remember being curious about the profession, but it would take me another year and half to actually pursue it.

After graduation, I began a few classes at the University of Kentucky with the idea of gaining a masters in the future. I was substitute teaching and volunteering, but I was still struggling on my sense of direction. Most of my friends were pursuing higher education or already in the work force, and I could tell that what I was doing was temporary. It was at this point my psychiatrist brought up ADHD coaching again and my research began! I looked up what in the world coaching was and started to look into programs. The more I read about it, the more it appealed to me. I’ve always loved helping others, and I felt that my own personal experience with ADHD could help me coach those struggling with similar issues. Over the past 5.5 years I’ve completed two programs and am now a Certified ADHD Life Coach. And I’ve enjoyed every second of it!! It has been such a learning process in not only becoming a coach, but running a business as well. I’ll admit, there are definitely days where I feel overwhelmed and wonder how I’m going to do it all. But then I meet with my clients and I love being a part of their ADHD journeys. They inspire and motivate me everyday with their creativity. These years since college have also reminded me that it was okay to be a little lost before I found my passion. Everyone’s journey looks different, and I was lucky enough to end up doing something that I love every day.

Talk soon,

Kathryn
